Tackling ESG Demand: Driving Smarter Solutions for Smart Buildings

Tackling ESG Demand: Driving Smarter Solutions for Smart Buildings

CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE

The goal was to expand into the ESG space by offering insights to Asset Managers to guide sustainable investments.

The existing platform already provided sensor data — energy use, air quality, and more — to Building Managers. The assumption was that we could repurpose this data for Asset Managers.

But after research and stakeholder feedback, it became clear that this wasn’t working.

RESEARCH & STRATEGY

RESEARCH & STRATEGY

I started by mapping the needs of Asset Managers through user interviews and analysing the existing platform. The current system provided sensor data like energy use and air quality, helping Building Managers optimise building performance.

At first, the goal was to repurpose this data to attract Asset Managers, helping them track portfolio-level ESG performance.

But after spending some time researching and gathering feedback, cracks started to show.

Stop! Rethinking the user focus

Stop! Rethinking the user focus

We realised Asset Managers needed different insights than the platform could deliver. They required portfolio reports rather than operational data.

Continuing down this path would have caused delays and added complexity. I challenged the direction and proposed a pivot: focus on Building Managers, delivering faster, more valuable ESG reporting using the existing platform.

IDEATION & COLLABORATION

IDEATION & COLLABORATION

We shifted our efforts to enhancing ESG reports for Building Managers, focusing on:

  • Leveraging existing sensor data to track energy savings.

  • Repurposing features to avoid costly new developments.

  • Creating actionable insights to support sustainability improvements.

I facilitated workshops, developed wireframes, and tested designs with users to ensure product-market fit.

DESIGN & VALIDATION

DESIGN & VALIDATION

I designed the ESG reporting dashboard, leveraging existing sensor data to provide actionable insights for users. To align the vision with business goals, I presented interactive prototypes to stakeholders, gathering their feedback and iterating to refine the design. Additionally, I conducted user validation sessions with Building Managers to ensure the product achieved both market fit and a seamless user experience.

OUTCOME

The new ESG feature drove significant impact. This project demonstrated how early pivots can avoid wasted effort, delivering a faster, impactful solution for both users and the business.
